tired5Lack of sleep is a big problem in North America these days. Many people don’t get the sleep they need for optimum health and safety. What’s keeping San Jose/Los Gatos awake?

  • Stress: Worrying about work, exams, children or relationships can cause many sleepless nights in our lives. Healthy eating, regular physical exercise, hobbies, and meditation or breathing exercises are all great ways to de-stress.
  • Jet lag: Quickly changing time zones can cause a host of nasty symptoms like headaches, nausea and the inability to fall asleep. Luckily, jet lag is temporary.  You can help to mitigate the affects of jet lag by drinking lots of water, avoiding alcohol, and re-setting your clock gradually a few days before your flight.  Light therapy can also be effective.
  • Delayed sleep phase disorder: People who suffer from this disorder just can’t wake up in the morning.
  • Advanced sleep phase disorder: These people become sleepy way too early in the evening so they wake up too early as well.
  • Narcolepsy: Narcoleptics falls asleep at the drop of a hat, if even occurs while they are busy; walking, talking, driving or eating.
  • Non 24 sleep wake syndrome: Some people’s internal clock isn’t set for 24 hours. Their cycle could be 25 or 26 hours, making regular bedtimes and wake up times hard to manage.
  • Restless leg syndrome: With this syndrome, your lower legs jump, twitch, burn or itch when you fall asleep, keeping you awake.
  • Sleep-walking: This occurs mainly in children when, during the deepest phase of sleep, their brains remain asleep but their bodies behave as if they were awake.
  • Obstructive sleep apnea: If you suffer from sleep apnea, your breathing stop briefly during sleep, sometimes as much as 100 times each night.

Sleep apnea can be a sleep robbing monster

If left untreated, sleep apnea is a potentially serious medical condition. If you suffer from sleep apnea, your breathing stop briefly during sleep, sometimes as much as 100 times each night. When we sleep our muscles relax, but, if your throat muscles relax too much, your throat muscles and tissues can fall back and block your airway. Middle-aged men, asthmatics, and people who are overweight, smoke, drink or are genetically predisposed are most at risk.

When your lungs don’t receive the air they are counting on top keep you alive, they wake you up. The awakening are so brief that many people are unaware of them, which leaves them wondering why they feel so tired in the morning. The sleep deprivation that results from these constant awakenings can cause poor performance at work or school, relationship problems, depression, accidents and vehicle collisions. Serious medical conditions like heart disease, diabetes and some cancers can also be caused by sleep deprivation.
