How technology is changing how we fix chips in teeth
Dental bonding is the application of “tooth-colored” resin material that is bonded to a tooth. Dental bonding is often done to improve the appearance of a chipped or discolored tooth. In addition, dental bonding is also used to close spaces between teeth, to change the shape or color of teeth or to make teeth look longer. Also, dental bonding is used as a cosmetic alternative to amalgam fillings or to protect the root of a tooth that has been exposed when a person’s gums recede. Fixing chips in teeth is one of the main benefits of this procedure.
Porcelain vs plastic
Basically there are two types of dental bonding: a dental bonding that is color-matched to the tooth and is then bonded to the surface of the tooth. This type of dental bonding is more effective for small and front fillings. Another type of dental bonding is for larger tooth-colored fillings. This type of dental bonding requires two appointments. Often, this dental bonding is made of porcelain; which is more durable, natural looking and more stain resistant.
Get a bond-ified advantage
There are several advantages of dental bonding such as being least expensive when it comes to other cosmetic dental procedures and being an easier procedure when repairing and updating teeth. Another advantage is that it can be done in a dental office in one visit and where limited tooth enamel is removed. Most importantly, with this dental procedure, anesthesia is often not required. However, this kind of dental material does not resist stains as well as crowns and some bonding materials do not last as long as crowns or fillings.
Keep in mind that bonded teeth do not require special care. All that is needed is good oral hygiene such as brushing twice a day, flossing once a day and seeing your dentist for regular cleanings and checkups. Dental bonding often lasts from three to 10 years; depending on how much bonding was done and your dental routine at home. In most cases dental bonding takes only 30 to 60 minutes per tooth to complete, is affordable and adds value to your appearance and self-esteem.
