There are lots of reasons why adult teeth could use a set of braces. These days a straight, white smile is a sign of success. Straight teeth can give you confidence at work, boost your love life and improve your health.
In our day and age, people are living longer. By preserving your teeth you can age gracefully and in good health. If you have a cross-bite, or if your teeth are misaligned, it’s easier for food and plaque to build up on your teeth. Food and plaque build-up can lead to gum disease, a real concern as we age as it leads to tooth loss and a myriad of health issues. An improper bite can hinder your ability to chew. People with “bad bites” often swallow big chunks of food, leading to intestinal pain and problems.
Maybe your parents couldn’t afford braces when you were a kid, or maybe you’re just more conscious of the benefits of having an attractive smile. Whatever the reason, most people know that a fantastic smile can make a huge difference their personal and professional life.
Many people say the rewards of undergoing an adult teeth braces treatment outweigh the temporary inconvenience and expense.
Oceans of Options
Braces have grown up over the last 15 years. Gone are the days of being called “metal mouth”, “tin grin”, or “cheese grater”. These days there are many options when it comes to the choice and cost of braces for adults.
Traditional metal braces
Traditional metal teeth braces are slightly more effective at moving teeth. If you have very crooked teeth or a severe bite problem, traditional metal braces may be the best choice for you.
Many people choose clear braces to stay away from the “tinsel teeth” look. They consist of ceramic or plastic brackets that are bonded directly to your teeth, so they are much less noticeable that metal braces. There is a downside to clear braces, though. They cost a bit more than traditional metal options, and the adhesive used to cement the brackets can discolor and darken.
Invisalign uses a series of clear, removable aligners to gradually straighten teeth, without metal, brackets or wires. Since you can remove Invisalign aligners, keeping your teeth and gums clean during your orthodontic procedure is easier than it is with metal or clear braces. Comfort and invisibility are the advantages of Invisalign, but Invisalign does have its limitations. If you have bite issues, severely rotated teeth, or teeth that are not vertically even, you might not be a good candidate for Invisalign braces.
The quick fix. If you don’t have time to wait for teeth braces treatment or if you have broken, chipped or severely stained teeth, porcelain veneers could be for you. Porcelain veneers are ultra-thin shells that are bonded to the front of your teeth to improve their appearance. They’re often used in conjunction with adult teeth braces when brakes, chips, or staining is an issue.
