To maintain lifelong health you’ll want to keep those teeth in your head for years to come. While you may think that your dental hygiene is up to par, there are habits you may engage in that can sabotage your teeth. Beware of the three, worst habits for oral health.
1. Using Tobacco products
Whether it is a pipe, cigarettes, or chewing tobacco, using tobacco products is one of the worst things you could ever do for your health. Cigarettes in particular contain carcinogens that can do serious damage. The presence of tobacco juices in your mouth over a long period of time will wreak havoc as well. You’ll have to worry about stained teeth and an increased risk for various cancers and gum disease. It’s simple. Don’t start using tobacco and if you already are, stop.
2. Soda, coffee and tea
Soda, coffee, and tea are extremely damaging to your teeth. All three can cause serious discoloration, robbing you of sparkling, pearly whites. Soda is of the greatest concern because it carries a double whammy of negative properties; high sugar and acid content that will eat away at your enamel, leading to tooth decay.
In order to have the least amount of damage, go with sugar-free beverages, use a straw with soda to decrease acid exposure on your teeth, and choose herbal tea to eliminate stains. If you must have your coffee or black tea, brush carefully when you are done.
3. Using your teeth for a job they’re not intended to do
Your teeth are meant to bite and chew food. Do not use them to try and open things, carry objects, or straighten things out. You’re likely to end up with cracked or broken teeth. Also, beware of crunching something hard like ice or popcorn kernels. You’re liable to fracture your teeth.
