Worried about smile makeover cost? Dr. Nancy Nehawandian explains the danger of a dental vacation
4 reasons not to go on a smile makeover cost saving vacation
Are you unhappy with the look of your teeth but feel a smile makeover is beyond your budget? Have you talked with friends or searched online for a cheaper solution? Are you considering a dental makeover in a foreign country where the cost is said to be hundreds of dollars less?
Advertisements promising cheap dental care while enjoying a vacation are increasingly prominent, but there are four very good reasons to avoid a smile makeover vacation.
What’s wrong with a dental makeover vacation?
There is nothing wrong with trying to reduce smile makeover costs, but there are some very important things to research and consider before having any dental work done.
Regulations are not the same worldwide. The high standards required of U.S. dentists regarding drugs, procedures, hygiene, equipment and quality of materials used are not the same in some foreign countries.
Dentists in foreign countries may or may not beeducated and certified to the same level as a U.S. dentist that has been trained and accredited by the American Dental Association.
Some procedures, like dental implants, require multiple visits over several months. If you don’t live close to the country where you plan to receive dental care, you will also have the expense of food, lodging and transportation to consider. Additionally, if there is any follow-up or unexpected emergency care after you return home, your insurance may or may not pay for it. Either of these situations can begin to eat into your savings.
Finally, if you do have problems with any of the work done in a foreign country, you do not have much recourse for getting it fixed or getting your money back.
How do you get the best value for your money?
Compare dental insurance plans for fees, as well as for what is covered. Verify that the ADA-certified dentist you choose is on your insurance network. Beyond fillings and extractions, cosmetic dentistry is not usually covered by insurance. However, the work done and care received must adhere to high U.S. standards. Most certified cosmetic dentists guaranty their work, ensuring total satisfaction and optimum care. Many U.S. dentists offer assistance in finding financing.
