Do you have chronic migraines? If so, then there’s a high probability that you also have sleep apnea. And, it’s quite likely that your doctor is missing your sleep apnea because of your migraines, according to a recent study. Fortunately, sleep apnea treatment can significantly improve your migraines.

How Likely Are Sleep Disorders with Chronic Migraine?

The new study was recently published looking at the difference between people with chronic or episodic migraine. It was based on a database of nearly 13,000 migraine patients, with about 1100 having chronic migraine and the rest having episodic migraines.

The study didn’t actually look at the diagnosis of sleep apnea, focusing instead on the risk level for sleep apnea based on their Berlin Questionnaire (BQ) scores. The BQ is a sleep apnea screening tool that has a reasonable reliability for predicting sleep apnea risk. They found that, overall, 37% of patients were at high risk for sleep apnea. However, the risk was much higher for chronic migraine sufferers: about 52% of them were at high risk.

However, only about 8% of all patients had actually been diagnosed with sleep apnea, suggesting that many people with migraine were suffering from undiagnosed sleep apnea.

Sleep Apnea Treatment Can Help with Migraines

Whether you are suffering from chronic or episodic migraines, you should consider getting tested. Most people can have a sleep test in the comfort of their own home, there’s usually no need to go to a sleep lab.

And if you do find that you’re suffering from sleep apnea, it could be a great way to improve your migraines. Studies have shown that when migraineurs have their sleep apnea treated, they see big reductions in their migraines. They experienced a reduction in migraine frequency of 92, a reduction in their migraine duration by 86%, and a reduction in their migraine severity by 89%. In response to these reductions, they reported that their migraine medication use also dropped by 95%!

That’s great benefits for people who often have a remarkably difficult time getting good treatment for their condition.
